  • 13/February/2009 [12:53 PM] -- Australia

Lady Sarah Ashley (Nicole Kidman) is a proper Englishwoman who journeys to Australia in the time leading up to World War II reaching Australia’s shores, determined to have her husband sell his cattle ranch to power hungry businessman named King Carney (Bryan Brown). However, she arrives to find out her husband has been killed and her plans change when she witnesses a man named Fletcher (David Wenham) cheating her husbands business for his own gain and mistreating a young boy named Nullah (Brandon Walters) because he is of mixed race. Overwhelmed with wanting a sense of justice, Lady Ashley wants to drive her herd of cattle to the town of Darwin so she can sell them to the troops, but she needs help and talks an independent cowboy (Hugh Jackman) into helping her get them there. Directed by Baz Luhrman (Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rouge) this film has everything from witty comedy, to western style bar brawls, romance, and war, all complimented by the astonishing costume work by Luhrman’s wife and collaborator, Catherine Martin. Nicole Kidman is delightful, adding her own special charm to a well written character and Hugh Jackman is magnificent as always as a leading romantic, action hero. This film has a lot of classic elements, often referencing the Wizard of Oz, and resembling such films as Gone With the Wind. This film is not available in MoPix and alas it should be, since it does have many action sequences, however it is narrated by the young boy Nullah, who does an amazing job for one so young. I do believe anyone with a sense of adventure will enjoy this film.

  • 12/February/2009 [5:13 PM] -- Iron Man

Like The Dark Knight, Iron Man spans all audiences, comic book fan or not this is the type of summer blockbuster that lasts far beyond the season. Tony Stark is a billionaire playboy and genius who is always chasing his next big dream. Selling weapons is his game and a business trip to Afghanistan quickly turns into chaos when Stark finds himself at the mercy of a warlord who wants him to build a missile. Knowing they will only kill him he instead creates a suit of armor, thus turning him into Iron Man and allowing him to escape. In returning from a near death experience he has decided to change his ways, and everyone close to him including his assistant Pepper Pots (Gwyneth Paltrow), friend Rhodey (Terrence Howard) and long time business partner Obadiah Stane (Jeff Bridges) are concerned and fascinated by the new man he has become. Director Jon Favreau against the feelings of other involved insisted on Robert Downey Jr to play the legendary Iron Man and boy are we glad he held his ground. Robert Downey Jr knows what makes Tony Stark tick and brings the character to life flawlessly. Like any action movie a lot of description is needed for the visually impaired, this film is now available on DVD so if you haven’t see it yet, I recommend renting it with a friend or family member to get the full effect, if you have already seen it then you know what all the hype is about. Two amazing comic book movies came out last year and this is one of them. Special note for those you don’t know, audiences who keep watching after the credits have rolled will be rewarded with a bonus scene.

  • 30/January/2009 [9:50 PM] -- The Dark Knight

With outstanding actors and a superb script at his side Christopher Nolan takes the realm of comic book movies to a new level. The Dark Knight opens in the wake of Batman Begins with the appearance of Batman (Christian Bale), Gotham City’s criminal underworld is unnerved. The criminals are also plagued by the new D.A., Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart), who is on an excellent course to shutting down some serious criminal activity. Enter a new villain, the Joker (Heath Ledger), who wants to unite the criminals for a common purpose to “kill The Batman”. Be warned this isn’t a kid-friendly action movie full of the whams and pows of the original series. This is a dark thriller with enough drama and tragedy to please even Mr. Shakespeare himself. Ledger turns in a haunting and disturbing performance as the Joker. I would go as far as to say he offers one of the best villain portrayals of all time, right on par with the likes of Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal. With eight Academy Award nominations it has made history as the only movie based on a comic to receive such high honors and it is well deserved. This is a very visual movie at times and I think it best to rent or buy the DVD and have a sighted friend describe in detail the masterpiece that is The Dark Knight and I guarantee you it will put a smile on your face! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  • 5/July/2007 [3:29 PM] -- Transformers

Brilliant, inspired, fun and all kinds of awesome! This film rocked in every way, from the script to the acting to the special effects showcase unlike any I have ever seen. They were able to create a spectacular movie without compromising any of the charm of the original Transformers series.  And the story goes… two robotic aliens the Autobots and the Decepticons, for centuries, have pursued a war with the fate of the entire universe at stake. When the battle comes to Earth the fate of the universe lands in the hands of Sam Witwicky (Shia Labeouf), he along with the help of the Autobots is the only thing that stands between the evil Decepticons gaining the ultimate power of the cube which in the wrong hands will only be used for evil. As an average teenage boy, Sam is frenzied with worries of school, girls and cars unaware that he in fact will turn out to be mankind’s last chance for survival. Sam and his friend Mikaela (Megan Fox) find themselves in the middle of an unbelievable battle between good and evil with the world hanging in the balance and learn the true meaning of sacrifice and victory. This film so well done, Shia Labeouf is by far one of my new favorite young actors in Hollywood, he is completely natural and has undeniable charisma. Transformers is so much fun you won’t even know what to do with yourself! I seriously can’t believe this film is not available in MoPix, it really should be considering how much of an action film it is. However, I did see this movie with my big brother Josh and we were able to fill him in and he enjoyed it tremendously as well! With this movie there is definitely “More than meets the eye” LOL!

    • (Dream Works)
    • Starring: Shia Labeouf, Megan Fox, Josh Duhamel, Tyrese Gibson and Peter Cullen
    • Rated: PG-13
    • Running Time: 144 mins
    • This film is currently NOT available in MoPix

  • 5/July/2007 [2:49 PM] -- Live Free or Die Hard

This is one of the most fun movies I have seen in a very long time! You thought the first Die Hard movie was your favorite? Well think again! Yes given, some of this movie is a little over the top but it is so well done it really doesn’t matter! Bruce Willis reprises the role of John McClane so flawlessly you would hardly know that 12 years has gone by since the last Die Hard installment in 1995. The movie begins on the Fourth of July weekend, McClane is assigned to bring in a young hacker, Matt Farrell (Justin Long) for questioning by the FBI, but this ordinary assignment turns extraordinary when he finds out this young man’s life is in jeopardy by a group of terrorists who Farrell has written a computer code for, these very same people are behind the following attacks on the United States infrastructure which begins to shut down roads, transport and communication of any kind over the entire nation. Thomas Gabriel (Timothy Olyphant) is the brains behind this clever and devastating attack, he has prepared for every angle but he never figured on the one and only John McClane. With McClane and Farrell working together they slowly begin to understand what is happening and are trying to find a way to stop the devious plan known to uber-geeks as a “fire sale”. This movie possesses all the ingenious humor of the first three Die Hard movies and takes the action, suspense and over all entertainment to whole new level. This film is enjoyable for everyone and is available in MoPix which I highly recommend so you don’t miss a moment of the action. Well played Mr. Willis… well played…

    • (20th Century Fox)
    • Starring: Bruce Willis, Justin Long and Timothy Olyphant
    • Rated: PG-13
