  • 15/December/2005 [3:23 PM] -- Pride & Prejudice

I have always loved Great Britain ever since I was a kid; in fact I have traveled to England three times in my life. Here is another good reason why I believe the Brits have it over the Yanks; when America remakes or adapts stories we get raunchy versions of original classics like The Dukes of Hazzard but when the British adapts they give us Shakespeare and now a new and improved version of Pride & Prejudice. I am sure most of you are familiar with the story of this classic novel if not from the book then through references in other films such as You’ve Got Mail. However let me break it down for those of you who are not familiar, Pride & Prejudice tells a story of romance between the lively Elizabeth Bennet (Kiera Knightly, who has definitely proven herself a truly talented leading lady) and the handsome yet very reserved Mr. Darcy (Matthew MacFadyen whom I had never heard of but as the Brits would say was quite brilliant). At their first encounter they leave very unfavorable impressions of each other, however, as events continue to bring them together, their opinions change and they begin to open their hearts to one another and are very pleased at what they find. Darcy falls for Elizabeth first, even making a marriage proposal, a bit too soon. Later on Elizabeth finds herself falling for Mr. Darcy. So much of this story is told with facial expressions that are woven so beautifully into the story by Knightly and MacFadyen. This film is skillfully directed by Joe Wright who has a way of showing humor along with understanding that is unbelievably poignant. The ensemble cast is remarkable Donald Southerland plays Elizabeth’s father with complete grace and Brenda Blethyn is absolutely hilarious as Elizabeth’s mother. I would absolutely recommend this movie whether you know the story or not; it is a wonderful adaptation of Jane Austin’s classic and well loved novel. Although some of the subtleties will be lost on the visually impaired I think there is much to gain in this heart warming film. It is also available in MoPix which I definitely suggest. So in conclusion I dare say the Brits have done it again!
