  • 18/September/2006 [8:54 AM] -- Hollywoodland

Hollywoodland is an exploration of fame and in the end what it may cost you. It is also the story of a man, a great man, and to many children at the time a Superman, George Reeves, who is eloquently played by Ben Affleck. Louis Simo (the ever remarkable Adrien Brody) is a private investigator who is looking into the apparent suicide of George Reeves and starts to uncover disturbing and inconclusive things involving the case and Reeves life. One of those being the torrid affair he was having with Toni Mannix (the vivacious Diane Lane). Directed by Allen Coulter, the film is vividly interwoven moving stylishly from one scene to the next. Giving the audience the many different scenarios of how George Reeves death may have occurred while also telling you the extraordinary story of his life. The art direction, cinematography, costume and set designs are by far some of the best I have seen all year. Hollywoodland is just a beautiful film to watch. Superbly acted, with everyone at the top of their game. Adrien Brody has never been better; Bob Hoskins is fantastically intimidating as Ed Mannix (Toni’s powerful and off-centered husband); Diane Lane gives an exceptional standout performance here as a woman who starts off as a confident seducer and ends as a volatile and distraught shell. It is an amazing performance that is both sexy and emotional. Ben Affleck gives one of his best performances to date bringing George Reeves to life with a performance that is commanding, touching and sympathetic. I would absolutely recommend this movie to the visually impaired it has exquisite dialogue and is highly entertaining. Since this film is not available in MoPix I would try to bring along a sighted person to help explain what is going on in the scenes where they recreate what could have happened to George Reeves on that dark night. Either way Hollywoodland is not to be missed!
